Moving Tips

Moving is the third most stressful event a person’s face in life, so we have compiled a lot of tips to help keep the stress away on moving day.

Tips

Local Moves

  • Try to book your move 4 weeks before your moving date to ensure availability on your desired date.

  • Give yourself a few weeks to pack; do not start your move at the last minute.

  • If you are moving from or into an apartment, remember to book the elevator for moving day.

  • Be sure to have the driveway cleared of vehicles the morning of moving day.

  • If it is winter, kindly clear any snow that may be in our movers’ paths on the morning of moving day.

  • Stack boxes against the wall while packing. This makes it easier for our movers to choose from the furniture or boxes as they load the truck.

  • For the safety of our movers and your pets, ensure that all pets are put into a safe area out of the way.

  • Before moving day make a floor plan of where you would like your furniture placed in your new home

  • Change the locks to your new home. You do not know who may still have keys to the old locks.

  • Change your pet’s tags to include new information, such as addresses and phone numbers. Also, update your vet.

  • Make sure to forward your mail from your old home to your new home and let your friends, family and employers know what your new address is.

Long Distance Moving Tips

Here are a few tips to make your long distance move go smoothly:

De-Clutter:

The first step to a successful long distance move is to de-clutter your house and get rid of any unnecessary items, so you don’t move more than you have to

Turn Off Utilities:

Schedule your utilities to turn off 1 day after the scheduled move date and have the utilities turned on in your new home 1 day before your scheduled arrival

Utilize Space:

Don’t under-pack your wardrobe; utilize the empty space at the bottom. You can fill this space with light stuff-ables, such as blankets, linens and pillows.

Love Your Valuables

  • Check and double check that nothing has been left behind before you leave your old home.

  • Make sure to inform former employers of your address change to ensure you receive important mail.

  • Mark the boxes you want first with different coloured tape to help you find them first in your new home.

Packing Tips

Proper packing is the first step to a successful move. Here a few tips to make packing easier and more efficient:

  • Packing with newspaper can leave ink stains on your valuables; it is best to use packing paper instead.

  • Place a layer of crushed paper in the bottom of boxes for cushioning. Pull one piece of paper at a time when crushing to ensure a better cushion.

  • Use labels, coloured tape or stickers to clearly identify which room the box belongs in.

  • Mark boxes packed with breakable items “Fragile”.

  • Do not over-pack your boxes! Lift them as you pack them; if they become heavy, top them up with light items and start a new box.

  • Use your luggage, duffel bags and baskets. They can all be filled with linens, blankets pillows and clothes. Do not pack heavy items, such as books and trophy’s.

  • Pack your crockpot, pots and pans with spices and other items from your spice cupboards to help save space and keep them safe.

  • Pack plates and saucers upright like records, separating each plate with paper.

  • Try to pack all liquids in plastic bins to keep your valuables safe in the event of a leak.

  • Use large boxes for light items, such as comforters and pillows.

  • Mark important boxes clearly to make it easy to find them first.

Before Your Moving Day

Local moves are billed on an hourly basis. Following these tips may save you money.

  • If you are moving to or from an apartment or condo, be sure to book your elevator.

  • If you are doing your own packing, please do not overfill your boxes and totes.

  • Be sure to tape the top of totes and boxes closed.

  • Label the sides of your boxes with large, clear writing.

On Your Moving Day

  • If you are moving to or from an apartment, please ensure the elevator is on service and all protective blankets (if required) are hung for the scheduled start time of your move.

  • Make sure the driveway or street has enough room for our truck.

  • Please secure your pets in a safe area away from the move.

  • Have a plan for furniture placement in your new home.
